SyneType (2009)

SyneTyper is a visual performance application software instrument inspired by the grapheme color synesthete, a person who perceives letters as shaded with a certain color.

Built using Processing, this fullscreen application maps letters on the keyboard to the most commonly associated grapheme-color synesthesia hues. For example, if the performer types an 'A', the graphics will be colored with a vibrant red. A variety of visual effects can be produced by moving the mouse while typing quickly.

Synesthetes can communicate via this program by parsing the visuals and non-synesthetes can experience a "sense" of having this special ability. Graphics utilize Perlin noise generation and recursive functions.

The speed and direction of the user's mouse movements also influence the motion of the graphical elements. This gives the user another dimension of control to expressively adjust the relationship between order and chaos. Users can toggle between light or dark backgrounds for color intensity and if typed letters are displayed.
